The mayor of Recife, João Campos (PSB), said that “there is not the slightest basis” in a complaint offered by the Federal Public Ministry that claims that his father, the former governor of Pernambuco Eduardo Campos, received bribes through an account in Switzerland.

The accusation by the Attorney General’s Office in Pernambuco involving the former governor, who died in a plane crash in 2014, was shown in a report by Sheet on Friday (7).

The complaint was filed last year against Aldo Guedes, a former assistant to Campos in the government, and against Sandra Leote Arraes, the widow of an uncle of the former governor and who held the bank account in Europe. Justice collaborators were also included.

In a note released on Saturday (8), João Campos states that his father was elected “the best governor in Brazil” several times, and was re-elected with the highest percentage in history. “You can only achieve this if you are honest, dedicated, competent, doing well for those who need it most.”

The note also claims that the accusation is “completely wrong”. “In fact, the action was suspended by the Federal Supreme Court (STF), through a decision by Minister Ricardo Lewandowski, which clearly reinforces its groundlessness.”

Lewandowski’s decision, signed in March, was issued because the minister has considered that the elements presented by the contractor Odebrecht in the collaboration agreement are invalid. This understanding follows the precedent of other cases resulting from Operation Lava Jato, such as criminal actions against current President Lula.

João Campos also stated that his father was a “man of integrity, correctness and dedicated to the missions given to him by the people”.

“His mandates in the Legislative, his passage through the Ministry of Science and Technology and his two terms at the head of the Government of Pernambuco make up the trajectory of a man who understood that politics is the main means to promote transformations in people’s lives. Never as a path to self-favor.”

The prosecution’s indictment was produced after international cooperation with Swiss authorities, who sent account data to Brazil. According to the Attorney General’s Office, between 2008 and 2009, firms linked to Odebrecht deposited US$ 771,500 (the equivalent of R$ 4 million today). in 2010.

The defense of Carlos Augusto’s widow has also denied the accusations of money laundering to Justice.
