Federal deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP) spoke this Saturday at CPAC 2024, the largest conservative congress in the world, which brought together prominent figures from the global right in Washington, such as former United States president Donald Trump and Argentine president Javier Milei. In his speech, which lasted about 5 minutes, he focused on denouncing the abuses of the Judiciary in Brazil and asked the American congressmen present at the event for a hearing on Brazil in the US Congress.
“Elderly people, pregnant women and even children accused of being terrorists, of having attempted an armed coup. Even though no weapons were used, the totalitarian judicial system created, with the help of traditional media, the narrative that these ordinary people were a threat to the Brazilian State. And this persecutory climate expanded with the censorship and persecution of critics of the current government. And, under the excuse of preserving democracy that no longer exists, these tyrants crushed the political opposition in the country”, he stated.
Going into specific cases of people who were unjustly arrested or persecuted by the Brazilian judicial system, Eduardo cited names such as Cleriston Pereira da Cunha, killed in Papuda in November last year, Filipe Martins, former advisor for International Affairs to the Bolsonaro government, and former judge Ludmila Lins Grilo. The speech also highlighted the forced exile of journalists critical of the abuses of the Judiciary, such as Allan dos Santos, Rodrigo Constantino and Paulo Figueiredo
The deputy also recalled that thousands of people were detained in a single day and labeled as terrorists without concrete evidence of threat or possession of weapons. Eduardo also cited the injustices against his father, Jair Bolsonaro, and asked those present at the event to help circulate images of the pro-democracy demonstrations scheduled for Sunday (25) on Avenida Paulista, in São Paulo.
“My father is now being sued and slandered in many different ways,” he said. “I end by making an appeal: report what is happening in Brazil. Tomorrow, we will have a million people on the streets of São Paulo in support of President Bolsonaro. Make these images circulate around the world. American congressmen, we ask for a hearing in your Congress . You are the leaders of the free world. Help us expose this tyranny.”
