There was a moment when the unimaginable happened: Galvão Bueno was speechless.

He began his career at Rádio Gazeta and was a commentator for Botafogo x Olaria, for the Carioca Championship. In the middle of the analysis at the break, he got lost and fell silent. He was rescued by the narrator Oswaldo Maciel.

“It went blank,” he confessed.

More than four decades later, he points out that it was the only time.

“The parrot was mute the first time. Then it never happened again. I never stopped talking”.

He spoke so much that, when recommending him to Boni, the all-powerful of Globo, in 1981, the director of journalism Armando Nogueira made the point: Galvão “expresses himself well, but is a little long-winded”.

In five episodes, the documentary “Look What He Did” is a journey through the career of the most famous narrator in the history of Brazilian TV. The series, which will be available from this Thursday (18th) on the Globoplay subscription service, uses last year’s World Cup in Qatar as a backdrop to tell the story of the announcer.

It was Galvão’s last Mundial for Globo. The first face-to-face was in 1978, in Argentina, by Bandeirantes.

The broadcaster’s advisory sent the Sheet the first episode. The documentary is directed by Sidney Garambone and Gustavo Gomes.

No football narrator has touched the level of popularity and dislike reached by Galvão Bueno. The two facets must be portrayed in the documentary and appear in passing in the opening chapter. In the case of offenses, there are the “hey, Galvão, vai take no c…”, shouted in stadiums during the games of the Brazilian team, and the hashtags on Twitter that asked the announcer to shut up.

Among the testimonies collected, the reporter Marcos Uchôa remembers that “in the sentimental memory of the Brazilian Galvão is”.

He turned into an entity. Few in the history of national television have been so imitated. It is the voice of the world titles of the Brazilian team in 1994 and 2002, as well as the humiliation of the 7-1 in the Mineirão, in 2014. Phrases that he used in the rout imposed by Germany, such as “here they come again” or ” became a walk”, were incorporated into the national fan’s imagination.

He is also the narrator identified with Ayrton Senna’s victories and titles in F1. He was the one who was live at the time of the accident that killed the pilot, his friend.

“Achieving success is not that difficult. It’s hard to live with success”, observes Galvão.

The ability to criticize and the level of demand are made clear in the first few seconds. To define him, full-back Cafu uses the word “bugler”. The son Popó realizes that it must be very difficult to work with his father. The testimony is followed by profanity thrown out of thin air by the narrator.

“He doesn’t understand shit,” says Nelson Piquet, who became Galvão’s foe, who broadcast the driver’s titles in F1 on Globo in 1981, 1983 and 1987.

In the testimonies of colleagues in the profession, there is admiration for those who “changed the level” of sports narrators in the country and became the “greatest in the history of the country” in the craft.

The production took him to places that were important in his career, such as the National Stadium in Tokyo, stage of the 1981 Flamengo World Cup, and the Yokohama International, where Brazil won the penta in 2002.

Galvão talks openly about his fans for Flamengo and goes to Maracanã with his family to watch a Fla-Flu for this year’s Guanabara Cup final. He jokes with his children and grandchildren for entering the venue with a ticket, not with a journalist’s credential, and the pilot Cacá Bueno, his son, points out that this is the first time he is in the stadium, as a fan, with his father.

Upon reaching the chairs, Galvão looks for the transmission booth, the one that has always been his home in Maracanã.
