Djokovic equals Steffi Graf’s record in the Top 1 – 02/20/2023 – Sport

Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic continues to collect career records. This time, he reached 377 weeks at number one in the men’s world ranking, equaling the historic mark established in the women’s category by former German tennis player Steffi Graf, who retired in 1999.
The expectation now is for the isolated record next week, as the Serb is not threatened at the top of the ATP list.
Number 2 in the world is Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz, winner of the ATP 250 in Buenos Aires on Sunday (19). Even if he wins the ATP 500 in Rio de Janeiro, played this week, he won’t be able to surpass the leader’s score.
Djokovic regained the world number 1 post by winning the Australian Open for the tenth time at the end of January, a year after being deported from the country for lack of a vaccine against Covid-19.
In the Australian tournament, the Serbian had also equaled the Spaniard Rafael Nadal in another record, with 22 men’s titles in Grand Slams. The two still trail behind North American Serena Williams (23) and Australian Margaret Court (24) when considering both genders.
Regarding the ranking, a mark that will hardly be reached by Djokovic is consecutive weeks in first place. That record belongs to Swiss Roger Federer, with 237, while Djokovic’s longest streak is 122 weeks, between July 2014 and October 2016.
With the new ranking update, this is how the Top 10 men were:
- Novak Djokovic (Serbia) – 7,070 points
- Carlos Alcaraz (Spain) – 6,480
- Stefanos Tsitsipas (Greece) – 5,940
- Casper Ruud (Norway) – 5,515
- Andrey Rublev (Russia) – 3,860
- Rafael Nadal (Spain) – 3,815
- Taylor Fritz (United States) – 3,660
- Daniil Medvedev (Russia) – 3,250 (+3)
- Felix Auger-Aliassime (Canada) – 3,200 (-1)
- Holger Rune (Denmark) – 3,161 (-1)
