Thai cuisine in the capital of São Paulo isn’t just about pad thai. Rice, curry, pepper and many spices are the basis of the country’s cuisine and make up the menu of different restaurants.

“This cuisine is defined by herbal, spicy dishes with an explosion of flavors”, says Thai chef Woonsen, who has lived in Brazil for a decade. She started selling typical recipes from her homeland to order and opened a restaurant, Krapook Khao, last year, in Paraíso.

This year, São Paulo gained a strong Thai representative: Ping Yang, chosen as the best new product by O Melhor de São Paulo – Bars, Restaurants, Delicatessen and Cuisine, special from Sheet.

With busy bookings since opening, the restaurant is run by chef Mauricio Santi, who has been researching Thai cuisine for 20 years and has worked in various cuisines in the Asian country, from street stalls to renowned restaurants.

At Ping Yang, he gives this cuisine a new lease of life and prepares a modern menu, based on dishes made to share at the table that don’t compromise on pepper.

Located in a townhouse with a brick facade decorated with flowers, it serves specialties such as gieow tod, a fried pastry stuffed with pork, shrimp and spices (R$ 38.90) and khao kraprow kluk, sautéed rice with garlic, pepper, basil , oyster sauce and seasonings, accompanied by beef, pork, chicken or tofu (R$48.90 to R$52.90). Founded by chef Renata Vanzetto, who is no longer in charge of the business, it features a contemporary menu inspired by Thailand. Grilled preparations guide the restaurant’s menu, with the kitchen open to the dining room. A suggestion to start with is the pla dip (R$62), a fish crudo. Spicy, the yam som kho moo yang salad (R$48) features citrus and grilled pork.
