The Minister of Justice and Public Security, Flávio Dino (PSB), said this Monday (13) that the debate on mandates for ministers of higher courts, such as the Federal Supreme Court (STF), is “contaminated” and can be interpreted with retaliation.

“Academically, I have always spoken in favor of it, understanding that at some point it is necessary. It happens, however, that we have to see the environment in which this is placed. It seems to me that there is an undue purpose of retaliation against the Supreme. It’s a fair debate that doesn’t happen at a good time,” said Dino at an event organized by the Getúlio Vargas Foundation, in Rio de Janeiro.

The subject came to the fore, because in the National Congress, some proposals that establish the mandate of the ministers between 8 and 16 years. One of the projects is a PEC presented by Senator Plinio Valério (PSDB-AM), which sets the period of performance in the STF at eight years, without the right to reappointment. There is still no consensus on the deadline, but Senate President Rodrigo Pacheco has already given signs in interviews that he may include the proposal among his priorities for this year.
