In the quest to increase security in the Amazon region, the government is considering expanding Brazil’s border with neighboring countries by about one hundred kilometers (km). This is what the Minister of Justice and Public Security, Flávio Dino, reports.

“In the constitution there is an authorization for the armed forces to act in the border strips, which in the light of the constitution is understood as a strip of 150 km from the border into the national territory. One of the themes that is under debate in the Amazon is to expand this border strip, and the minister [da Defesa] Múcio defends this thesis. Yesterday we spoke with the President of the Republic, we are now going to discuss this topic. Minister Múcio yesterday speculated the idea of ​​250 km, this would allow for a higher performance by the armed forces”,

explains Minister Flávio Dino.

Flávio Dino’s statement was given after he participated in the launch ceremony of the Plan Amazônia: Segurança e Soberania (Amas), which provides for public security actions in the states of the Legal Amazon: Acre, Amapá, Amazonas, Maranhão, Mato Grosso, Pará, Roraima, Rondônia and Tocantins. The goal is to tackle crimes in the region, especially environmental ones. According to the Minister of Justice, the government wants to implement more monitoring bases in the region.

“The most important thing about Amas is the installation of 34 integrated bases: Federal Police and state police, 28 land bases, six river bases and two command centers; an international cooperation center led by the Federal Police and invitation to the police of the Amazon countries and another command center of the National Force of environmental operations, both headquartered in Manaus, commanding the forces that are in the nine states”,

details the minister.

For the actions of the Amas plan, investments are of R$ 2 billion, from the National Public Security Fund and the Amazon Fund. The amount will be used for the implementation of structures and the purchase of vehicles, weapons, helicopters, trucks, armored boats, among other equipment.
