Dino points out political neutrality in the position of Minister of the Supreme Court

The Minister of Justice and Public Security, Flávio Dino, visited the Senate, this Wednesday (29), and reported that he is already in conversation with senators about the hearing at the Constitution and Justice Commission (CCJ) to analyze Dino’s nomination for the Federal Supreme Court (STF), held on December 13th. Furthermore, he stated in a press conference that “the Supreme Minister has no side”.

Accompanied by the acting president of the Senate, senator Veneziano Vital do Rêgo (MDB-PB), and the rapporteur at the CCJ for his appointment, senator Weverton (PDT-MA), Dino also said that he discussed topics related to the Ministry of Justice at the meeting , especially on public security, which today “demands the central attention” of the department, as well as ratifying the importance of moving forward on joint themes.

Dino defended harmony between the Three Powers, stating that “we cannot live in a country where there are dissensions or divergences such that they impede the progress of public policies, of the legislative measures that the country needs”.

“And the Federal Supreme Court, as an instance of legal security, guardian of the rules of the game, must also be this vector of harmony in our country. And this is the main meaning of this dialogue that I seek to have at this moment between politics, which I have the honor of being part of, with this professional trajectory of law and, who knows, having the honor of the approval of the Senate, whose verdict will be on the day 13″,

he stated.

The minister, who did not rule out the possibility of returning to his position as senator before the hearing, said that he has “a lot of tranquility, a lot of serenity in this dialogue” with the senators.

“Because I always present objective data, which is known to everyone, regarding my professional career in the legal field, and I have a very close relationship with the political world because I am part of it. So being here in the Senate is a joy, it’s an honor, and it’s being home,”

he said.

As for the opposition to his name, Dino considers that in matters like this, regarding the choice of STF minister, “there is no government, no opposition”. Asked about his “incisive manner”, the minister recalled that he has been a deputy, governor, federal judge and stated that each role has a characteristic and has a style.

“This is an issue in the country and whoever goes to the Supreme Court, or intends to go to the Supreme Court, evidently by wearing a toga, no longer has a political side. So, for me, I don’t look at whether it’s government, whether it’s opposition, whether it’s party, A, B, or C. I look at the country, I look at the institution (…). The Supreme Minister has no party, the Supreme Minister has no ideology, the Supreme Minister has no political side. So, the moment the President of the Republic makes the nomination, it is evident that I change the clothes I wear and this clothes today is, in search of this support from the Senate, the clothes that, if I deserve this approval, are the clothes I will wear ever”,

explained Dino.

This Tuesday (28), rapporteur Weverton (PDT-MA) expressed support for the nomination and said that the current Minister of Justice must be approved by the Senate. The parliamentarian estimated that Dino will receive more than 50 votes from the Plenary [são necessários 41 apoios para garantir a aprovação].

Dino is the second candidate for Supreme Court minister nominated by Lula in his third presidential term (MSF 88/2023). The first was Ricardo Zanin, approved by the Senate by 58 votes to 18, in June.

Appointed to the position of Attorney General of the Republic (MSF 89/2023), Paulo Gonet was also president of the Senate, but did not speak to the press.
