Minister Flávio Dino, of Justice, announced this Monday morning (24) the transfer of 13 prisoners in the Brazilian Amazon region from state prisons to the federal penitentiary system. According to him, the detainees are part of criminal factions that operate mainly in the state of Amazonas, where there is a dispute between organized crime groups.

“We have in the Brazilian Amazon, especially in the Amazon, a dispute between factions, and today we are advancing in the transfer of prisoners from the state penitentiary system to the federal one. The expectation of the Federal Criminal Police is that there will be a transfer of 13 prisoners or leaders of factions in the state of Amazonas to the federal system”, he said during a press conference in Brasília in which he presented details of the arrest of another suspect of participating in the death of councilwoman Marielle Franco, in the morning in Rio de Janeiro.

According to Dino, the transfer of prisoners was determined preventively to avoid a “more acute crisis in public security in the state of Amazonas”.

Data from the 2022 Public Security Yearbook, released last week, show that the state of Amazonas is the third most violent in the country, with a rate of Intentional Violent Deaths of 38.8 per 100,000 inhabitants. There were 1,531 homicides last year although, in percentage terms, the amount was 9.3% lower than in 2021.

On the other hand, Manaus is among the 50 most violent cities, with a rate of 53.4 deaths per 100,000 people, being the 23rd on the list.
