Dilma had a meeting with ambassadors two months before the impeachment in 2016

The meeting with ambassadors in July last year that led to the condemnation of former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) to ineligibility for eight years was not the only one held by a representative of the Republic, but had a different result from the previous one. Dilma Rousseff (PT) also summoned representatives from other countries to a meeting shortly after having her impeachment request filed in the Chamber of Deputies.

In March 2016, the former president invited all of the approximately 150 foreign ambassadors in Brasília to an event entitled “Meeting with Jurists for the Legality of Democracy”, just three months after the then president of the Chamber, Eduardo Cunha (MDB) authorized the beginning of the process. Dilma was temporarily removed from office two months later and definitively removed from the presidency on August 31.

The memory of Dilma’s meeting with ambassadors was mentioned by lawyer and former minister Fabio Wajngarten this Monday morning (3) in a social network. “Unbelievable,” he said, along with an image of a report about the meeting.

According to a survey by Folha de São Paulo at the time, the Planalto Palace said that around 70 ambassadors or representatives attended the meeting, 28 of them from Italy, the United Kingdom, Bolivia, Ecuador, Cuba and Russia. It was Dilma’s first meeting with the diplomatic corps amid the political crisis.

The purpose of the meeting, however, was not informed by Planalto. A week earlier, Dilma said in the Chamber that it would be necessary to “mobilize society around a new campaign for legality”, referring to the similar event held in the 1960s, after the resignation of President Jânio Quadros, in defense of João Goulart’s inauguration. , then Vice President.

Dilma Rousseff’s impeachment process was approved by the Chamber of Deputies on April 17, 2016 by 367 votes in favor and 137 against. The following month, on May 12, the Senate approved the removal by 55 votes to 22.

Then-Vice President Michel Temer (MDB) took office until August 31, when Congress confirmed the ex-president’s loss of office for the crime of responsibility for carrying out fiscal maneuvers known as “pedaladas”.
