State deputy Guto Zacarias (União Brasil), deputy leader of the Tarcísio de Freitas government at Alesp (São Paulo Legislative Assembly), decided to enter the dispute over the name of a future station on line 2-green of the São Paulo subway. A bill he authored, already presented to the Legislative House, wants the street to be baptized as Fernão Dias, and not as Paulo Freire.

The parliamentarian’s proposal was thought of as a reaction to the court decision that vetoed the homage to the bandeirante. Earlier this year, after Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans) took over as governor, the São Paulo Metro decided to remove the name of the patron of Brazilian education from the station and replace it with Fernão Dias.

The 2nd Chamber of Public Law of the Court of Justice of São Paulo decided, however, that the company controlled by the state government lacked transparency in the amendment, since it would have used as a justification a survey with popular people without clear methods and that could not be audited .

Published last week, the decision took place within the scope of a lawsuit filed by state deputy Ediane Maria (PSOL). She still considered that the act was in “disconformity with the values of an egalitarian society”.

A member of the MBL (Free Brazil Movement), deputy Guto Zacarias argues that Fernão Dias “was a trailblazer and pioneer” who contributed to the development of Brazil and, therefore, should be honored.

“The name of Fernão Dias on the subway station will serve as a constant reminder of the country’s pioneering spirit and legacy of development,” he says, in a justification presented alongside the bill.

“It is an opportunity to highlight the importance of pioneers and explorers who shaped the foundations of the Brazilian nation. In addition, the subway station becomes a cultural reference space, which can encourage knowledge and interest in the history of the country among users public transport”, he says.

When questioning the new name given to the subway station, congresswoman Ediane Maria maintained that the act was illegal as it honored a historical figure linked to black and indigenous slave exploitation.

“We are in a Brazil where plural voices are raised against all kinds of prejudice and discrimination. Our action proposed opening up to this understanding. In other words: it is impossible, in the middle of 2023, to honor a historical personality related to the exploitation of indigenous and black people in Brazil,” said the parliamentarian.

“This change of name is inadmissible. The bandeirante Fernão Dias had hands stained with indigenous blood. The subway is a public use equipment, and this homage does not fit”, he added.

At the time when the change in the name of the station was revealed by the column, Metrô stated that the measure took place after an opinion poll was carried out with residents of regions close to the future station. The consultation would have been completed at the end of 2022.

The name Fernão Dias would have had 57% of preferences, against 29% for Paulo Freire and 14% for Parque Novo Mundo. “The name Paulo Freire was only provisional for the creation of references in the projects, until confirmation by the surveys”, said Metrô, in a note.

For the judge Maria Fernanda de Toledo Rodovalho, however, the survey was carried out with an insufficient number of respondents and did not indicate the selection criteria of the people who would be heard, which would have resulted in a measure taken without transparency.

The future station is expected to be built at a point on Avenida Educador Paulo Freire, in the city of São Paulo, close to the Fernão Dias highway.
