The leader of the opposition in the Chamber, deputy Carlos Jordy (PL-RJ), filed this Wednesday (29) a request requesting a public hearing on the assets received by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), between 2003 and 2010, and by former president Dilma Rousseff, between 2011 and 2016, during ceremonies abroad.

In the request, Jordy argues that “clarifications” are needed about the gifts received by PT members. He also asks for the “due return to the Union” of the items. The request was made in the wake of the case of jewelry brought to Brazil by the entourage of former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) after trips abroad. One of the jewelry sets was valued at R$16.5 million and ended up being seized by the Federal Revenue Service.

The deputy asked that the following be present at the hearing: auditors from the Federal Court of Accounts (TCU), representatives of the Secretariat of Administration of the Presidency of the Republic and the Personal Office of the President of the Republic. In justifying the request, Jordy alleges that “President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva received 9,037 items in his first 2 terms at the Planalto Palace, according to TCU data”.

“After analyzing part of this collection by the Court, it was found that 559 were incorporated into his personal collection. However, it should be noted that the Court limited itself to bibliographic and museological documents received by presidents during gift exchange ceremonies, official visits, trips abroad, hearings and trips by heads of state”, said the deputy. “Therefore, it is fundamental to know how the processes for the return of these goods are going and the investigations by the Federal Court of Auditors on the subject”, he said.
