Deputies take office with demonstrations against and in favor of the Lula government

The 513 deputies elected and re-elected in October last year took office in the Chamber this Wednesday morning (1) in a ceremony partially chaired by President Arthur Lira (PP-AL), who is seeking re-election with the support of Luiz’s government. Inácio Lula da Silva (PT). He commanded part of the ceremony until the moment when his father, former parliamentarian Benedito de Lira (PP-AL), fainted in the plenary during the roll call of parliamentarians and had to be removed by the brigade members.

After the former parliamentarian’s discomfort, the session was led by Deputy Átila Lins (PSD-AM) and resumed by Lira about 20 minutes later. The Amazon parliamentarian will preside over the election of the new Board of Directors of the House, scheduled for 4:30 pm.

Also participating in the inauguration were eight deputies who were licensed to head ministries in the Lula government and who were exonerated to join Lira’s vote for the presidency of the house, such as Marina Silva (Rede-SP), Alexandre Padilha (PT-SP) and Luiz Marinho ( PT-SP).

Throughout the ceremony, elected and reelected deputies took the opportunity to express their positions in the new legislature, such as the PL parliamentarians who had stickers pasted on their backs with slogans against President Lula. And also from PSOL, with posters calling for the punishment of those involved in the acts of vandalism on January 8th.

“So I promise”, said the parliamentarians when hearing their names during the roll call, in reference to the commitment and the oath of office.

Among the deputies present, there were some appointed as alleged supporters of the acts of vandalism on January 8, who had a request for suspension of diplomacy by the Prerogativas group, such as Carlos Jordy (PL-RJ), Silvia Waiãpi (PL-AP), André Fernandes (PL-CE) and Nikolas Ferreira (PL-MG). The Attorney General’s Office opposed the request.

Also present were newcomer Rosângela Moro (União Brasil-SP) accompanied by her husband, former judge Sérgio Moro (União Brasil-PR), elected senator who will take office in the afternoon; Deltan Dallagnol (Podemos-PR), a former prosecutor who gained national prominence during the Lava Jato Operation investigations; Érika Hilton (Psol-SP), the country’s first trans federal deputy; Dani Cunha (União Brasil-RJ), daughter of the former mayor, Eduardo Cunha; between others.

The PL bench is the largest in the Chamber, with 99 elected deputies, followed by the PT/PV and PCdoB federation, with 80 parliamentarians. The list is completed with União Brasil (59), PP (47), PSD (42), MDB (42), Republicans (41), PSDB/Cidadania (18), PDT (17), Psol/Rede (14) , PSB (14), Podemos (12), Avante (7), PSC (6), Patriota (4), Solidarity (4), Novo (3), PROS (3), and PTB (1).

At the end of the inauguration ceremony, President Arthur Lira announced that deputies have until 1 pm to form parliamentary blocks and nominate their leaders, in addition to choosing positions on the Board of Directors. The deadline for registration of candidacies for the presidency and other vacancies ends at 3:30 pm.
