The Attorney General of the Republic, Augusto Aras, said that his body purposely acted “discreetly” preventing “extremists of all natures and orders from demonstrating against the democratic regime”.
The statement was given during the opening of the judicial year at the STF (Federal Supreme Court), this Wednesday (1). Aras addressed President Lula (PT), also present at the ceremony, when making such a statement and criticized the press.
He highlighted the work of the PGR (Attorney General of the Republic) against coup leaders who destroyed the headquarters of the three Powers on January 8 and said that, to date, the PGR has offered 525 complaints, 14 arrest warrants and 9 search and seizure.
“This great search for the accountability of the culprits unfortunately occurs. But we cannot forget: the Public Ministry and this Judiciary, during the previous years, Mr. President of the Republic Luiz Inácio, had in a discreet, strategically discreet way, preventing that extremists of all natures and orders to demonstrate against the democratic regime. However, many times we hear from the press that nothing was done by the ministry”, he said.
Aras also stated that he will act preventively whenever necessary to repress attacks on democracy and that the MPF must demonstrate its qualities and generosity and fidelity to the Federal Constitution.
“We, citizens of the democratic rule of law, need to say every day: democracy, I love you, I love you, I love you, because this hard-won democracy required the blood, sweat and tears of many Brazilians and many others who preceded in the civilizing process”, he declared.
