Deputies criticize Maduro’s visit to Brazil, says survey – 07/23/2023 – Panel

A survey on the perception of parliamentarians in relation to the foreign policy of the current government, carried out with 250 of the 513 federal deputies, showed that 63% of them classified the visit of the dictator Nicolás Maduro to Brazil in May as bad or bad. Among the 159 who rejected the visit, there are representatives of President Lula’s base parties (PT) and the opposition to the government.
The PL of former president Jair Bolsonaro leads the ranking, with 31 members criticizing the meeting. The caption is followed by União Brasil (22), PSD (21), PP (18), Republicans (13), MDB (10) and PDT (7).
Conducted by the NGO Democracia Sem Fronteiras Brasil, the survey showed that another 22 deputies classified the visit as good or excellent and another 39 as neutral.
Lula received Maduro for an official visit. On the occasion, the petista called the meeting with the Venezuelan leader a “historic moment” that “reflects a serious foreign policy”. The dictator also participated in a meeting promoted by Lula with South American presidents in Brasília.
The survey also showed that 94 deputies assess the position of the Brazilian government’s current foreign policy as positive, compared to 86 with a negative assessment. Another 42 parliamentarians classify it as neutral.
The deputies were also asked about the Brazilian positions on the war in Ukraine: 121 classified it as bad, 62 as normal and 27 as good.
Regarding Brazil’s relationship with China, 37 parliamentarians said they evaluated it as negative and 116 as positive. Another 58 chose the answer “we can improve” and 16 “we should rethink relationships and partnerships”.
