Dengue deaths: interior concentrates deaths in SP – 02/02/2024 – Health

At least seven people died as a result of complications from dengue in the state of São Paulo. All deaths occurred in inland municipalities with less than 300,000 inhabitants. The deaths were recorded between December and January.

The municipalities that have already confirmed deaths from the disease are: Jacareí (2), Bebedouro (2), Pindamonhangaba (2) and Dois Córregos (1). Three of these deaths already recorded by city halls have not yet been included in the state’s official CVE (Epidemiological Surveillance Center) count.

In addition to the deaths, the State Department of Health registered 19,243 cases of the disease as of January 27, the date of the last update provided by the department.

Of the total cases, 1,792 were registered in the capital of São Paulo. The city of Pindamonhangaba has already registered a higher number of cases, with 1,930.

To try to stop the spread of the disease and the number of deaths, on Wednesday (31), the mayor of Bebedouro, Lucas Seren (PL), announced that the municipality will fine R$1,400 for house and land owners who are repeat offenders. in non-compliance with measures to prevent and combat the Aedes aegypti mosquito.

The fine would apply to properties whose owners prevent agents from entering or that do not have clean land and have breeding grounds.

“We cannot allow a small number of people to severely harm those who are doing their part in the fight against dengue,” he said in a video on social media.

According to state data, the city has already registered 155 cases of dengue this year. An exclusive care ward for patients with symptoms of the disease was opened on Thursday (1st) at the municipal hospital.

A resident of the city for three decades, manicurist Marilda Soares, 53, says she has had dengue fever twice, the last time was in the first week of January, with the most intense symptoms.

“The first time I had pain in my body and a bit of a headache. This time it was much stronger, it really knocked me down. I had to go to the hospital for IV fluids twice”, he says.

Like her, student Raíssa Manuele Matias, 22, also had dengue this year. She believes that she contracted the disease due to debris on land near her house, in the Jardim Cláudia neighborhood, which accumulated stagnant water.

“Here we take care of the yard and always make sure there is nothing lying around that could accumulate water. But not everyone does the same. I think it’s great that there will be a fine for these people, so who knows, maybe everyone will worry about taking care of their spaces” , it says.

In Jacareí, the situation is similar. With two deaths and 1,608 positive cases of the disease, the city declared a state of emergency on Monday (29). The decree allows the city hall to adopt “all necessary administrative measures, such as contracting material acquisition services and contracting services to combat the epidemic.”

The deaths, according to the city hall, were of two men, aged 84 and 74, both with comorbidities.

A resident of the Bandeira Branca neighborhood, day laborer Luzia Aparecida Gonçalves, 57, reports that she was unable to work for three weeks after contracting dengue fever. With symptoms such as body pain and headache, she says she is gradually returning to work.

“I still feel very tired and I can’t clean every day. I’m only cleaning twice a week,” she says.

According to the woman, several people in the neighborhood also had the disease.

“My neighbor, her son and several other people on the street also had dengue. The neighborhood is infested,” he adds.

According to the city hall, 279 cases of the disease have already been recorded in the neighborhood. The high rate led to a cleaning operation being carried out at the site this week.

Another city in the interior, Pindamonhangaba also recorded two deaths from the disease. According to the city hall, they occurred in December.

This year, the city already has 1,930 cases of the disease, a number much higher than the 15 cases recorded in the same period in 2023.

In Dois Córregos, a city with just over 27 thousand inhabitants, one death and 473 confirmed cases of dengue have already been recorded this year. Another 114 cases of the disease are still awaiting confirmation.

Cleaning activities are also being carried out in an attempt to stop the spread of mosquitoes. Aedes aegypti and raids will be carried out in all neighborhoods of the city.
