Demonstrations against abortion take place in several cities in Brazil

Demonstrations against abortion take place in several cities across the country this Thursday (12). The event is mainly a reaction to the vote of former Federal Supreme Court (STF) minister Rosa Weber in favor of the decriminalization of abortion under ADPF 442.

The event was called by several conservative movements, including Marcha da Família and Nas Ruas. Organizers are betting that this will be the largest pro-life demonstration in the country’s history. Last weekend, the “Walk for Life and Against Abortion” already brought together protesters in several cities across the country, but the coordinators of this 10/12 event are expecting an even larger audience.

This Thursday morning, in several cities, in addition to banners with pro-life messages, participants carried Israeli flags, in honor of the victims of attacks carried out by the Islamic terrorist group Hamas in recent days.

Other issues emerge on banners, posters and speeches, such as the fight against drugs, gender ideology, pedophilia and child trafficking.

In Rio de Janeiro, where the event began at 9:30 am on Copacabana beach, in addition to messages in defense of life, protesters carried posters with inscriptions such as “In favor of children’s innocence”, “No to drugs”, “No to premature sexualization “, “Fora Lula” and “Brazil above all”.

In Brasília, the event was attended by lawyer and former judge Sebastião Coelho, who gained notoriety after his intervention in the trial of one of the 8/1 prisoners at the Federal Supreme Court. Protesters carried banners such as “STF no abortion” and “Pray for peace in Israel”.

In Salvador, where the march was scheduled for 9:30 am, protesters began to gather in the morning at Farol da Barra wearing t-shirts with the message “I am against abortion”.

In Belém, participants crossed Av. President Vargas carrying a banner with the inscription “Leave our children alone!”, according to images published by the Notícias do Pará portal.

Senator Magno Malta (PL-ES), who participated in a demonstration in the municipality of Vila Velha (ES), published a video on his Instagram speaking against ADPF 442, and posted the following text: “Judicial activism has put us in the unfortunate situation in which the Judiciary Power takes over the prerogatives of the Legislative Power. They are making decisions on topics such as abortion and the decriminalization of drugs, and it seems that other equally sensitive topics will not be excluded. They seem to forget or simply ignore that Brazil is a majority nation Christian. The desires and values ​​of our population are contrary to those being imposed. They are individuals who were not directly elected by vote, but are making decisions that affect the future of more than 200 million people.”

In São Paulo, on Av. Paulista, where the start of the event was scheduled for 2:30 pm, some protesters were already starting to gather an hour before the event. Posters calling for Congress to act against judicial activism were seen amid pro-life messages.
