The “Walk for Life and Against Abortion” brought together crowds in around 100 cities from all regions of the country last Sunday (8), the date on which National Day of the Unborn was celebrated.

The demonstrations are part of the pro-life movement’s reaction to the recent attempt by the Federal Supreme Court (STF) to judge the decriminalization of intrauterine murder up to the 12th week of pregnancy.

The issue entered the STF trial as one of the last acts of the former president of the Court, former minister Rosa Weber. After the negative repercussion, the new president of the Supreme Court, minister Luís Roberto Barroso, decided not to put the trial on this month’s agenda, however, he signaled that the matter could be discussed again before the end of his term.

According to the Brazil Without Abortion movement, the states that confirmed the mobilizations were: Acre, Amazonas, Pará, Alagoas, Bahia, Paraíba, Ceará, Pernambuco, Piauí, Distrito Federal, Goiás, Mato Grosso do Sul, Mato Grosso, Espírito Santo , Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina. In total, according to the movement, around 100 cities registered demonstrations.

The former president, Jair Bolsonaro (PL), and the former first lady, Michelle Bolsonaro (PL), were present at the demonstration in Belo Horizonte (MG), where they spoke to a crowd.

Bolsonaro said that “the gates of hell opened” after the left returned to rule the country. The speech is a reference to the advancement of agendas such as the decriminalization of abortion and drugs, in addition to the relativization of private property and the overturning of the time frame.

In São Paulo (SP), the concentration began on Avenida Brigadeiro Luís Antônio. When publishing records of the demonstration on social media, state deputy Gil Diniz (PL-SP) said that “the message is loud and clear”.

In Brasília, adults, children and elderly people walked peacefully along the Esplanada dos Ministérios dressed as benches and with posters displaying messages against abortion.

In Cuiabá (MT), an estimated 8 thousand people participated in the walk. In images posted on social media, it is possible to see a crowd occupying the entire side of one of the city’s main avenues.

Wanted by People’s Gazette to comment on the demonstrations, the president of Instituto Luzeiro and organizer of the events in Curitiba (PR), Paulo Melo, said that the STF goes beyond its competences when trying to decide on abortion and that “life is a fundamental right and must be protected from conception.”

Melo also said the pro-life movement is committed to raising awareness about options for mothers considering abortion, such as voluntary delivery.

According to the president of Instituto Luzeiro, Brazil has an adoption queue of eight families for each child.

“With the imminent advancement of those who defend the murder of babies through the judiciary, mobilization is needed to pressure the legislature to enforce the right to life and increasingly protect the unborn child. Thus, with these mobilizations we give strength and support to our representatives. It is impossible to defend this genocide of innocent people and also remember that the majority of the Brazilian population is against abortion”, highlighted Melo.
