The defense of Silvinei Vasques, former director general of the Federal Highway Police (PRF), claims that he is being prevented from studying for the second phase of the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB) exam. The former head of the PRF has been imprisoned since August at the Papuda Penitentiary Complex, in Brasília, for alleged interference in the second round of the 2022 presidential elections.

Lawyer Marcelo Rodrigues requested this Tuesday (5) that the Minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) Alexandre de Moraes release the necessary material for Vasques to study for the test, informed the Veja magazine. Moraes authorized the former PRF director to leave Papuda to take the first phase of the OAB exam held at the end of November.

He was approved and needs to prepare for the second phase, scheduled for the end of January. The lawyer stated that, contrary to what occurred in the first phase of the test, the prison administration did not immediately release the books. According to Rodrigues, the prison management questioned the Criminal Executions Court (VEP) to find out whether or not the material could be handed over to the former director of the PRF. For the defense, the measure is delaying and aims to hinder Vasques.

Last month, Vasques’ defense told the court that he is at “risk of being poisoned in prison”, in addition to having lost around 12 kg since he was arrested. The former head of the PRF was arrested on orders from Moraes on August 9, in Florianópolis, during Operation Citizen Constitution. According to investigations, PRF agents had carried out checks to hinder the movement of voters in the second round. The actions would have taken place mainly in the Northeast, where the then candidate Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) appeared to have an advantage in the electoral polls in relation to the then president Jair Bolsonaro (PL).
