Decision against Biden government releases misinformation – 7/5/2023 – Lúcia Guimarães

A US federal judge has issued an exceptionally broad injunction banning the Joe Biden government from communicating with social media companies to question content in the United States.

The decision is a response to the lawsuit filed by republican state attorneys from Missouri and Louisiana who accused the government of censorship and violation of the First Amendment of the Constitution -which guarantees freedom of expression- by asking companies like Twitter, YouTube and Meta to monitor or remove posts.

Judge Terry Doughty of Louisiana, author of the decision and appointed by former President Donald Trump, honored the past tradition of his state’s elite, known for some of the worst health statistics in the country. The freedom of expression that the magistrate defends includes spreading lies about vaccines and other viral disinformation campaigns.

During the most intense period of the Covid pandemic, health officials in Louisiana were powerless in the face of the spread of false vaccine news on social media, which helped to fill emergency rooms and caused countless premature deaths in the state that is in 43rd place in the ranking. At the moment, the decision is preliminary, and it is possible that the government will try to appeal. Still, it is extraordinary for the details of the restriction of communications by government agencies and for validating conspiracy theories, with potential repercussions on public health, the integrity of the 2024 election, and countless other aspects of American life that have migrated to social platforms, such as alerts about natural disasters, child sexual abuse and terrorism prevention.

It is no longer possible to take seriously the rattle in defense of free speech hysterically rattled by conservatives in recent decades. Judge Doughty’s injunction, in the middle of the Fourth of July holiday, exposes the hypocrisy of American “exceptionalism”.

The conservative agenda has been reduced to keeping a minority in majority control. Thus, the rationality of arguments is the first victim of militancy, today a tail wagging the ever-growing San Bernardo dog that is the American population.

The party that pulls books from libraries, bans race relations history curriculums, and claims the right to decide what adult women do with their bodies wants to convince us that monitoring false rumors in elections, silencing federal health agencies about the dangers of a pandemic and trying to prevent deaths due to ignorance fueled by private companies are forms of individual freedom.

Considering Elon Musk’s orgy of disinformation and extremist propaganda on Twitter and Mark Zuckerberg’s proven Facebook role in derailing the 2016 election, the idea that federal agencies can’t even email billionaire titans of apocalypse, asking for moderation and protection of life, illustrates the appetite of the fascist wolf in the skin of the libertarian sheep.
