BR-381 between Belo Horizonte and Governador Valadares is one of the most dangerous highways in the country, with a large number of accidents. Duplication is pointed out as a solution to reduce the number of accidents and deaths on the highway. During the government of former president Dilma Rousseff (PT), the road works were bid for 11 lots, but construction was delayed in several sections. In 2022, the highway was bid, but ANTT canceled the bidding due to lack of interested parties. The agency intended to increase the attractiveness of the concession with the inclusion of a stretch of BR 262, in Espírito Santo, but it was unsuccessful. Afterwards, the then Minister of Infrastructure, Tarcísio de Freitas, suggested making cross-investments to make the concession viable. The idea was for the government to use the money from railroad contracts to reduce investment risk. Last year, the Federal Highway Police registered 2,453 accidents and 154 deaths on the stretch – third in the list of the ten highways with the most accidents and deaths in the country. Today, according to ANTT, the average travel time between Governador Valadares and Belo Horizonte is 7 hours to travel the 303.5 km of the highway.
