The number of Brazilian men and women interested in football has grown, according to the most recent Datafolha survey. Despite this, there was stability in the number of practitioners of the modality in relation to the previous survey, carried out in 2018.

A portion of 20% of the population says they play football. It was 19% five years ago. The part that claims not to kick balls fluctuated from 81% to 80%, within the margin of error, plus or minus two percentage points, with a confidence level of 95%.

In the division by gender, the variations were also within the margin of error, which is three percentage points in this cut. Now, 38% of men say they play football. Women went from 4% to 6%, with 94% still far from the modality.

A total of 2,535 people aged 16 and over were interviewed between July 31st and August 7th, in 169 municipalities across Brazil.

72% of respondents claimed to be interested in football. The answer “a lot of interest” was given by 25%, and 47% expressed “a little interest”.

The general number represents a relevant growth in relation to previous surveys. In January 2018, 59% said they were interested in the sport. In December 2019, the index was 61%

In the survey carried out at the turn of this month, in the midst of the women’s World Cup, 80% of men expressed an interest in football (36% with “a lot of interest”, 43% with “a little interest”). In the case of women, the general interest is 64% (15% with “a lot of interest”, 49% with “a little interest”).

The survey by age groups shows that young people are more interested in sports: 79% of respondents aged 16 to 24 showed interest. There are 30% who gave the answer “very interested”.

All this enthusiasm, however, has a limiting factor. In times of modern arenas, expensive tickets and elite audiences in the first division of the Brazilian Championship, lower income segments of the population are less frequent in matches.

Only 39% of those with a monthly family income of up to two minimum wages say they have gone to the stadium to watch a match. The number jumps to 76% among those with a family income of more than ten minimum wages.
