Olympic medalist in Tokyo, Daniel Cargnin was runner-up in one of the most important judo tournaments in the world, the Grand Slam of judo, this year being held in the capital of France, Paris. The Brazilian lost in the final to Georgian and three-time Olympic medalist Lasha Shavdatuashvili.
On his debut, Cargnin first defeated the Cypriot Kyprianos Andreou by Waza-ari (point marking) . In the next round he faced Umlaut Demirel and won by Ippon (highest score in judo). In the quarterfinals, Daniel fought Urunbayar Odgerel and won by Waza-ari once again. Before reaching the final, the Brazilian passed Canadian Arthur Margelidon and won without much difficulty.
In the decision, Lasha Shavdatuashvili needed a little over a minute to set up an Ippon against his opponent and win the fight.
“It’s very important to start the year with a medal in one of the most important competitions in the world. These are competitions that test our level. Now it’s time to take and see what I got right, but also what I got wrong to adjust”, said Cargnin in an interview after receiving the silver medal.
“I left with a bitter taste after losing the final, but now that I stop to think about it, I think I’ve evolved a lot since I switched categories. And that just shows me that I have more to improve and, God willing, I’ll bring a medal in Paris -2024”, completed the judoka.
