Daniel Alves’ lawyer in the rape case in Spain, Inés Guardiola, reported this Wednesday (10) that the former player returned to Neymar’s family the €150,000 (R$817,000) lent a few months ago.

The money was used to mitigate the sentence of Alves, sentenced in February to four and a half years in prison for the rape of a young woman in a nightclub in Barcelona on December 30, 2022.

The defense deposited the amount as a form of “mitigation to repair the damage caused”, which was allocated to the victim after the conviction. As a result, his sentence could be reduced by up to half — it is not clear how much the mitigating factor actually reduced his prison time.

The information was passed to Sheet by Alves’ team. According to the lawyer, “Dani Alves returned the €150,000 to Neymar a week ago.” Alves had asked his friend for help because his assets in Brazil were blocked due to a lawsuit opened by his ex-wife.

The former player was released on provisional liberty on March 25th, and should be kept in that condition until the final sentence is promulgated.

This Wednesday (10), the Barcelona Court denied an appeal by the prosecution and the victim’s lawyer for Alves to return to prison before the final sentence. According to the judges, the delivery of passports, the commitment to attend weekly hearings in Barcelona and the guarantee of bail of €1 million (R$5.4 million) are enough to eliminate the risk of flight.

The judges took the opportunity to defend themselves against the criticisms made by the victim’s lawyer about the “indignation” of seeing Alves released provisionally and “upon payment”. The court said that statements like these “only contribute to generating social confusion” and that “the imposition of bail responds to the strict application of current legislation.”

It is not known how Alves raised €1 million for bail, but lawyer Inés Guardiola had said she was not considering asking Neymar’s family, after Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia reported this information. This caused Neymar’s own father to go public to deny the possibility on social media.

“As everyone knows, in the first instance, I helped Dani Alves, without any connection with any process. In this second instance, in a situation different from the previous one, in which the Spanish Court has already decided on the conviction, they are speculating and trying to associate my name and that of my son to a matter that today no longer concerns us. For us, the matter is over”, wrote Neymar Sr. on March 21.
