Manaus (AM) – In the session on Thursday (18), deputy Dan Câmara (PSC) once again addressed piracy in the rivers of the Amazon. He stated that crime is growing at unimaginable proportions and that today it affects citizens in general: whether kayakers in the Tarumã Basin or cargo ships on the Amazon River.
The parliamentarian resents more up-to-date data, which allow an exact dimension of the size of the problem. Figures for 2017 showed losses of around BRL 100 million per year for companies that transported cargo along rivers in the Amazon Region – 70% of these losses in fuel. More recent investigations, from 2022, carried out by the Union of River Navigation Companies in the State of Amazonas (Sindarma), show that more than 1.5 million liters of fuel were stolen that year in the State, which points to a very expressive progression of organized crime.
Dan Câmara referred to Senator Omar Aziz’s (PSD) proposal for the creation of a national waterway police. “It has to do with the national security of the Amazon, with the fight against drug trafficking on the borders and the crime of piracy, which is why it has my support”, declared the deputy. “Only an extreme and energetic measure, with an integrated management and the incorporation of new technologies will be able to change this reality”, he concluded.

The guidelines on piracy came to light after the PSC deputy held public security hearings in Iranduba and Manacapuru, municipalities in the Metropolitan Region of Manaus.
From the 19th to the 23rd of May, Dan Câmara will be visiting 14 municipalities along the Alto Solimões and Purus channels, and meeting with leaders from those locations in the areas of public safety and fishing.
