Pastor and elected senator Damares Alves (Republicanos-DF) says she will work to reverse the decision of the Lula government (PT) to withdraw Brazil from the so-called Geneva Consensus Declaration, a multilateral agreement against abortion and in defense of families composed of couples heterosexuals.
The former minister of the government of Jair Bolsonaro (PL) made a post on social networks condemning the decision of the new PT administration.
“The Geneva Consensus was one of the largest alliances signed by Brazil in recent decades. In short, it guarantees the protection of countries from international interference and embargoes, with national sovereignty prevailing in the area of abortion”, she wrote.
And he continued: “Lula has just weakened the pro-life policy in Brazil.”
Brazil had joined the document in October 2020. The then ministers Ernesto Araújo (Foreign Affairs) and Damares Alves (Women, Family and Human Rights), exponents of the so-called ideological wing of management, attended the ceremony representing Bolsonaro.
The declaration argues that “the family is the natural and fundamental unit of society”, in which the woman “plays a critical role” and that “abortion must never be used for family planning purposes”.
The US, at the time commanded by Donald Trump, was one of the sponsors of the declaration, in 2020. In Joe Biden’s inauguration, however, they had already failed to endorse the text and represent his leadership.
The announcement of Brazil’s departure from the council was made by the Lula government this Tuesday (17).
The justification, expressed in a joint note from the Foreign Affairs, Women, Human Rights and Citizenship and Health portfolios, is that the text “contains a limiting understanding of sexual and reproductive rights and the concept of family and may compromise the full implementation of national law about the matter”.
Brazil’s decision comes a day after the Ministry of Health revoked six ordinances of the Bolsonaro administration. One of them foresaw the need for the doctor to notify the police in case of abortion due to rape.
