Curitiba protests against the impeachment of Deltan Dallagnol

A mix of indignation, fury and civic devotion marked the protest held in Curitiba this Sunday (21/05) against the impeachment of federal deputy Deltan Dallagnol (Podemos-PR) by the Superior Electoral Court.

The thousands of people, dressed in black as a sign of mourning, but without giving up the green and yellow, seemed incredulous that a legal chicanery could have invalidated the 345,000 votes given to the parliamentarian in the last election, making him the most voted in Paraná . The TSE decided to revoke the mandate of the former head of Lava Jato even without a Disciplinary Administrative Proceeding (PAD) against him, solely based on the hypothesis that the prosecutor resigned to avoid punishment and ineligibility.

The mood of the demonstration, however, was far from sadness or admission of defeat. Deputy Marcel Van Hattem (Novo-RS), who heads up articulation for a Judiciary CPI, mocked Minister Gilmar Mendes, of the STF, who stated that Curitiba “has the germ of fascism”. “In fact, it was here that the germ of the fight against corruption was born. And today, Curitiba resurfaces to set an example that we are not afraid,” said Hattem.

Name of Lava Jato prosecutor is strengthened

With the chants of “together with Deltan”, many protesters expressed the conviction that the political career of the 43-year-old former Lava Jato prosecutor is just beginning. The impeachment, which they consider unfair and are fighting to reverse, could end up having the opposite effect, securing Deltan’s name for even higher flights.

“I am certain that Deltan will return to Congress and occupy the position he wants to occupy, because he represents the voice of the people, the voice of Paraná. This discretion by the TSE ends up projecting Deltan’s image, and all of this is an impetus for those who know that he will become a future mayor, governor or senator. The people do not accept such barbarity in silence,” said lawyer Ricardo Alexandre, 46, who went to the protest with his wife, Silvia, and daughter Sofia, 4 years old.

The protest brought together many families, from infants a few months old to octogenarian grandparents. Civil engineer José Eduardo Cavalli carried his children the whole time: little Helena, 5 months old, was sleeping in her shoulder, and Enzo José, 2.5 years old, was shouting “justice, justice” over his father’s shoulders. “He’s been learning since he was little to defend the values ​​of justice, to be a citizen. I hope he takes this for the rest of his life”, said José Eduardo, next to his wife, Heloísa, a business administrator.

Deltan criticizes attempt to “close the doors of voting”

In his speech, Dallagnol himself spoke as someone convinced that his career is far from over. “At more than one moment in history, they thought they were burying a Christian, but they were wrong. They thought it was the end of Joseph’s story, the end of Daniel’s story, the end of Jesus’ story. But they were actually planting change,” he stated. “We are here today so that there is no juristocracy crossing the line. When they close the doors of voting, they are closing the doors of democracy”.

The councilwoman of Curitiba, Indiara Barbosa (Novo), asked the demonstrators not to forget to sign a supra-partisan undersigned for the installation of a CPI to investigate abuses by the judiciary. The online undersigned already has more than 400 thousand adhesions. “It is absurd because here in Paraná, the Regional Electoral Court unanimously considered that Deltan could be a candidate, without problems. And now in Brasilia, the TSE, also unanimously, revokes his mandate? It makes no sense, what is the legal security that exists in our country?”, he questioned.
