CPMI on January 8th approves report indicting Bolsonaro and 60 other people

Text written after five months of work by the CPMI of 8/1 calls for the indictment of 61 people, such as the former president

The Joint Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPMI) on January 8th in the National Congress approved, this Wednesday (18th), the opinion written by the collegiate’s rapporteur, senator Eliziane Gama (PSD-MA). There were 20 votes in favor and 11 against.

The text called for the indictment of 61 people, such as former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL), five former ministers and former commanders of the Armed Forces, namely Almir Garnier, from the Navy, and Marco Antônio Freire Gomes, from the Army. Military police officers from the Federal District are also on the list, including former corporation commander Fábio Augusto Vieira.

Now, the CPMI report will be sent to investigative bodies, such as the Federal Public Ministry (MPF) and the Attorney General’s Office (PGR). The crimes accused of Bolsonaro were criminal association, political violence, violent abolition of the Democratic Rule of Law and coup d’état, which can add up to 29 years in prison.

Eliziane’s report points to Bolsonaro as the main culprit for the January coup acts, creating a narrative that goes back to his stance at the head of the Presidency, with criticism of other powers, especially the Federal Supreme Court (STF), and highlights that the violence of January 8th was preceded by “symbolic violence”.

“Normalized in the first echelon of the Republic, verbal virulence spread among the cordon of supporters of the former president, who used it as an instrument to silence criticism and disqualify critics, in an escalation of aggressiveness and intolerance that would culminate in the attempt to material suppression of the very opportunity for dialogue, through the attack on democratic institutions”,

wrote the senator.
