One day after the Joint Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPMI) on January 8 approved a series of requests that may help advance investigations into alleged omissions by the federal government in acts of vandalism, the leader of the opposition in the Senate, Rogério Marinho (PL-RN), demanded that the collegiate “fulfill its mission”.

For him, in addition to the lines of investigation underway in court related to the invasion of the buildings in Praça dos Três Poderes, including evidence of incentives and financing of criminal acts, the CPMI also needs to investigate the “incompetence or intentionality of the federal security authorities, which allowed it all to happen.”

In an interview with Novabrasil FM this Wednesday morning (12), the senator explained that it is “at least strange” that not enough apparatus had been mobilized to contain groups formed by many elderly people and children. He also lamented a certain resistance to investigating the probable omissions “even after the revelation of images showing that the former minister of the Institutional Security Office (GSI) was there” and evidence that he and the Minister of Justice, Flávio Dino, “ were warned in advance of the imminent risks”.

Analysts and politicians consulted by the People’s Gazette believe that the extensive list of requests to call witnesses could become an obstacle for the CPMI to analyze all the information received and deliberate on new searches for information. The agreement between the government and the opposition to block access to documents available in public bodies about the episodes of January 8 would then serve to “clean the agenda” by consensus and unlock the progress of both narratives that are dueling in the collegiate.

The thesis of a coup d’état orchestrated by former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL), defended by government supporters, will appear in the final opinion of the rapporteur, Senator Eliziane Gama (PSD-MA). As for the thesis of intentional omission by the Lula government to make possible the invasions of public buildings, supported by the opposition, it should appear in a parallel report, which has begun to be prepared. This document should be presented as an alternative to be voted on at the end of the work, but it will tend to support the position of critics of the government’s action to prevent investigations.
