The Bolsonarist mayor of Sorocaba, Rodrigo Manga (Republicans), was summoned to testify at the CPMI on January 8 for having fraternized with coup demonstrators who contested the result of the 2022 elections, blocking part of the Raposo Tavares highway and the Catello Branco highway.

The call to testify was made by Deputy Rogério Correia (PT-MG), a member of the commission. In the justification he says that the mayor “gave broad support to such anti-democratic movements”.

Among the lines of investigation adopted by the CPMI is the participation of public authorities in direct or indirect support to the anti-democratic acts that emerged after the second round of elections.

On November 1, 2022, the mayor himself posted a video on his social networks highlighting the “orderly” character of the act and celebrating the fact that there was no alcohol among those present. Manga arrived at the protest, was applauded and had his name shouted by those present. He also took selfies with the protesters and exchanged hugs with some of them.

The mayor was also denounced at the Public Ministry of the State of São Paulo and at the STF (Federal Supreme Court), in the fake news inquiry.

“The mayor of Sorocaba not only gave mere support, but he himself acted as one of the organizers of the illegitimate coup act, having carried out a live broadcast on all his main social networks, giving legality to an act notoriously illegal”, states the document, presented by lawyer and former state deputy Raul Marcelo (PSOL).

At the time, several roads throughout Brazil were blocked by demonstrators who did not recognize the result from the polls. The escalation of acts took place with the attempt to blow up a fuel truck in Brasilia, the vandalism to the headquarters of the PF (Federal Police) in the federal capital and the invasion of the three powers on January 8.

Questioned about his summons, Mayor Rodrigo Manga said he has not yet been notified. “But he is calm, in case there is a need to provide any kind of clarification”, says a note from his advisory, sent to the Panel.

Manga supported former president Jair Bolsonaro in 2022 and is close to the governor of São Paulo Tarcísio de Freitas, his coreligionist. Both visited Sorocaba during the electoral race. He was also notable for creating a “war” against the Marijuana March.

The mayor’s wife, Sirlange Frate Maganhato (PL), is the second alternate for Senator Marcos Pontes (PL), former Minister of Science and Technology of Jair Bolsonaro (PL).

The testimony of Mayor Rodrigo Manga still does not have a date to occur.
