Courts of accounts defend Fake News PL – 05/28/2023 – Panel

Entities representing the country’s audit courts released a manifesto in defense of freedom and transparency on the internet. They are in favor of the Fake News PL, which is being discussed in the Chamber of Deputies.

“The project follows the path of the world’s democracies that are debating rules for the performance of big techs. […] Rules for moderating content on the internet and networks, among other specificities and regulations, are present in the debate and proposals”, says the document.

Entities such as the Association of Members of the Audit Courts of Brazil (Atricon), the National Council of Presidents of the Audit Courts (CNPTC) and the Brazilian Association of Municipal Audit Courts (Abracom) are signed.

The text also criticizes the attempt by technology companies to seek to influence the debate through publications on their platforms.

“It is not admissible that large technology companies responsible for platforms operating on the internet, using practices that are even illegal, set rules that deconstruct the democratic environment, interfere with the sovereign decision-making power of the National Congress and, thus, violate the right of the Brazilian people to freely choose their paths, without digital colonialism, exercising the country’s autonomy in such a strategic issue”.
