Council members take a stand against Amnesty’s PEC – 05/15/2023 – Panel

Members of the CDES (Council for Economic, Social and Sustainable Development), known as Conselhão, and the Council for Social Participation took a stand this Monday (15) against the Amnesty PEC, an amendment that intends to pardon parties that did not comply with the electoral legislation.

The 52 signatories of the document released this Monday ask that the Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) government, committed “to equity and social justice”, make efforts to overthrow the PEC, “as a gesture of defense of the spirit of citizenship of the Federal Constitution”.

They point out that this will be the fourth pardon given to the parties.

“It’s past time, and there has been enough time for the associations to adapt to the rules, for the fight against racism and sexism to advance in our party and political structures, changing the shameful reality of underrepresentation of women and black people in national politics. And this can only be done with the maintenance of penalties on parties that do not comply with such rules”, they maintain.

The undersigned is addressed to the Minister of the Civil House, Rui Costa, and to the Minister of Institutional Relations, Alexandre Padilha, responsible for relations with Congress and coordinator of the Council.

Signed, among others, economist Laura Carvalho, political scientist Ilona Szabó, black activist Douglas Belchior and philosopher Sueli Carneiro.

The CCJ (Commission on Constitution and Justice) of the Chamber must approve this Tuesday (16) a proposal that establishes the greatest amnesty in history for electoral irregularities committed by political parties, which in 2022 alone received R$ 6 billion from public coffers.

In addition to inconsistencies in the application of resources, non-compliance with quotas for female and black candidates would also be forgiven. The proposal has the support of base and opposition subtitles.
