Corinthians meets Cianorte again in the Copa do Brasil – 01/30/2024 – Sports

Corinthians will meet an old acquaintance again in the 2024 Copa do Brasil. This Tuesday (30), the CBF (Brazilian Football Confederation) held the draw for the first phase clashes, and the black and white team was drawn to face Cianorte, from Paraná.

19 years ago, in 2005, the Parque São Jorge formation — at the time reinforced with players hired by its then partner MSI, which brought names such as Carlos Tevez, Carlos Alberto, Roger Flores and Gustavo Nery to the club — was almost eliminated soon after. in the second phase of the knockout stage for the modest team from Paraná.

In the first match, in Paraná, the home team won 3-0 in the debut of Argentine coach Daniel Passarella. Therefore, to at least take the dispute to penalties, Corinthians needed to win by the same score. But the Corinthians managed to avoid penalties.

In normal time, with two goals from Tevez and two from Roger, in addition to one scored by Gustavo Nery, the São Paulo team won 5-1 and took the place, avoiding an embarrassment with early elimination.

This time, the regulations are different. As they will face each other in the first phase, the duel will be played in a single game. Cianorte will be the home team, as they are below Corinthians in the current CBF club ranking.

The entity has not yet released the official match calendar, but the first phase games are based on the 21st and 28th of February, while the second phase matches will be on the 6th and 13th of March.

The first two phases of the Copa do Brasil are played in single games. In the first, the worst-placed teams in the confederation’s club rankings will play at home, while the best-placed teams will advance in the event of a draw.

In the second phase, in the event of equality on the scoreboard, the classification will be determined by penalties.

The first phase of the competition will feature 80 teams. In the draw, they were distributed into eight pots, with ten teams in each, using the 2024 CBF club ranking as the criterion for division.

The 40 best placed teams were placed in pots A, B, C and D of the draw — they will have the advantage of playing for a draw in the match — and will face, respectively, the teams distributed in pots E, F, G and H, which will have the field command.

In addition to the 80 clubs starting the tournament, another 12 will start in the competition from the third phase onwards. They are: Palmeiras, São Paulo, Red Bull Bragantino, Flamengo, Fluminense, Botafogo, Grêmio, Atlético Mineiro, classified for the Copa Libertadores; Athletico Paranaese, classified via Brasileiro 2023; Goiás, current champion of the Copa Verde; Ceará, winner of the Copa do Nordeste; and Vitória, champion of Series B.
