Corinthians forwards agreement with Portuguese coach António Oliveira – 02/06/2024 – Sports

Corinthians is close to agreeing to hire Portuguese coach António Oliveira, 41. The professional was at Cuiabá, a club with which he had a contract until the end of the year. The information was initially released by UOL and confirmed by Sheet.

To close with the commander, the São Paulo team agreed with Cuiabá to pay the termination fine, in the amount of R$ 1.1 million. His contract with the Parque São Jorge team will also last until December.

The Portuguese has been in Brazilian football since 2020. Firstly, he started working in the country as an assistant for Santos on the coaching staff of his compatriot Jesualdo Ferreira. Later, still as an assistant, he worked at Athletico, where he moved to the role of coach.

Before taking over Cuiabá in 2022, a club with which he had a good campaign in the Brazilian Championship, finishing the tournament in 12th place, just ahead of Corinthians, he also coached Coritiba.

Oliveira will be the replacement for Mano Menezes, fired on Monday (5) after a sequence of four consecutive defeats for Corinthians in the Campeonato Paulista. The negative series left the black and white team in the competition’s relegation zone.

As provided for in the Campeonato Paulista regulations, Corinthians will only be able to register their new coach in the competition when they “prove the discharge or formalization of a labor termination agreement for the dismissed professional”.

Neither party officially talks about the amount of the fine defined in the contract, but since Monday (5), when the commander was dismissed, there have been contacts to negotiate the best method of payment.

The contract was signed during the administration of former president Duilio Monteiro Alves, valid until 2025. According to ESPN, the contract provides for full payment of salaries until the end of this year in the event of unilateral termination during the 2024 season. currently worth around R$9 million.
