Congress decided to anticipate the government and file a project that creates the policy for decarbonizing the country’s energy matrix and provides for an increase to 15% of biodiesel in diesel composition within 90 days.
The issue had been addressed in recent days by members of the government. On Tuesday (25), the Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, stated that the government would send “in the next few days” to Congress the Fuel of the Future project, which increases the mixture of ethanol in gasoline from 27.5% to 30%.
Vice President Geraldo Alckmin had also signaled that it would be possible to anticipate from 2026 to 2024 the increase to 15% of biodiesel in diesel composition.
The text was presented by Deputy Alceu Moreira (MDB-RS) and creates the ten-year policy for decarbonizing the energy matrix of Diesel Cycle equipment and engines, with the aim of gradually and systematically reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the use of diesel in the country.
The text provides for an increase to 15% of biodiesel in the diesel composition within 90 days, a percentage that rises to 16% from March 1st of the following year, to 18% from the second year after the enactment and 20% from the 1st March of the third year.
The project says that the government will be able to increase the percentage of ethanol in gasoline to 30%, “provided that its technical viability is verified or reduced to 22%.”
The proposal also creates the Diesel B quality information system, established by the ANP (National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels) for the effective inspection of biofuels and fossil diesel.
In a note, Ubrabio (Brazilian Union of Biodiesel and Biokerosene) stated that the project will be fundamental for the growth of clean energy. According to the entity, the text “will provide greater legal certainty and predictability to the biofuel sector.”
