Collision with Tarcísio indicates that Bolsonaro wants Bolsonaro – 07/06/2023 – Bruno Boghossian

Tarcísio de Freitas showed Jair Bolsonaro’s subjects that the king was naked. “I think it’s risky for the right to give up tax reform,” said the governor at a meeting of the PL, alongside the former president.
The two sought different routes in the tax reform debate. True to his character, Bolsonaro chose the path of systematic opposition to traverse Lula’s four years. Tarcísio opted for some ideological veneer, even to create a brand that would differentiate him, little by little, from his former boss.
If the collision was inevitable, it is telling that it occurred less than a week after Bolsonaro was declared ineligible. The speed of the public clash between godfather and godson exposes a political field taken by pathological suspicions and private ambitions.
Bolsonaro did not need to go on the attack against the tax reform, a proposal that was born without the stamp of the left and that would probably be approved with votes from parties that were from his allied base just over six months before.
The former president, however, seized the first opportunity that arose after the TSE defeat to try to show off some firepower. The initial objective was to demonstrate leadership over the Bolsonarist right, avoiding a vacuum that could be filled by names like Tarcísio.
Bolsonaro also tries to use what he calls “PT reform” to preserve a certain monopoly of anti-PTism. While part of the right votes with the government on some issues (by conviction or bargaining), he rehearses an obsessive opposition, in search of the credentials of the only genuine alternative to Lula.
Big allies claim that Bolsonaro feeds an illusion of returning to the polls and sells the Sebastianist thesis that the courts can review his ineligibility if Lula leads the country to a disaster. That’s why, these politicians say, he wants to work against the government, avoid naming a successor and close doors to potential competitors. Bolsonaro chose Bolsonaro.
