On the morning of this Friday, the 21st, in the auditorium of the Palácio do Sententrião, Governor Clécio Luís signed an emergency decree on indigenous lands in the municipality of Oiapoque, referring to problems in cassava cultivation.
“For about ten years, a fungus has been attacking cassava plantations. This attack has been deepening and some alerts have been issued. Unfortunately, there has now been a complete collapse of cassava production in Oiapoque; all the plantation lands will not produce”, said Governor Clécio Luís.
Cassava and all its by-products, such as flour, in addition to being the staple food of indigenous peoples, also affect the state’s economy, mainly that of the municipality of Oiapoque.
The situation mainly impacts traditional peoples and family farming in the municipality of Oiapoque, since the plant is the food and economic base of this population. This month, Governor Clécio Luís requested, in the country’s capital, federal aid to combat the plagues.
The situation of a large increase in the number of diseases caused by the fungus in plantations is already being monitored by the federal government. In emergency cases, relief and assistance actions to affected states are permitted.
“The cassava crisis is initially phytosanitary; they are pathogenic agents that impede the production of cassava and that bring repercussions, such as the food crisis, that is, the indigenous population and family farmers lose their livelihood and their main means of food”, said Marcos Velho, a Funai-Amapá indigenist, during the signing of the government decree.
