City of SP registers first case of avian flu – 07/07/2023 – Market

The city of São Paulo recorded the first case of avian flu this Thursday (6), according to data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA). The H5N1 Influenza virus was diagnosed in a wild bird of the species Trinta-réis-real —scientific name thalasseus maximus.

In all, Brazil has 62 confirmed cases of the disease, 61 of them in wild birds. Only one domesticated bird received a positive diagnosis for H5N1. The virus had been detected in a subsistence farm in Serra (ES), on a farm that had duck, duck, goose and chicken.

In the state of São Paulo, seven cases have been confirmed so far, all in wild birds. Four cases affected birds of the Trinta-réis-de-bando species (Thalasseus acuflavidus) and three of the species Trinta-réis-real. The municipalities with outbreaks are Ubatuba, Caraguatatuba, Guarujá, Santos, São Paulo and São Sebastião, according to the Map.

Commercial poultry farming remains free of the disease, according to the ministry. That is, Brazil maintains the status of a country that does not have the disease before the World Organization for Animal Health.

The Map data panel, updated daily at 1 pm and 7 pm, is available for public consultation. According to the website, four samples are under investigation. Three wild birds in the cities of Indaial (SC), Venda Nova do Imigrante (ES) and Castanhal (PA), and a domestic chicken located in Rio Preto da Eva (AM).

In the last 30 days, 193 investigations were carried out on suspected cases, with 32 confirmations of the disease, including the positive case of the wild bird in the capital of São Paulo.

The ministry warns the population not to collect birds that are sick or dead, but to call the nearest veterinary service to prevent the disease from spreading.
