City in SP honors Plínio Salgado with portal and bust – 06/27/2023 – Panel

The Chamber of Councilors of São Bento do Sapucaí (173 km from São Paulo) approved a bill to name the integralist leader Plínio Salgado to one of the access portals to the municipality, a tourist resort in the Mantiqueira mountain range. Mayor Ana Catarina (PP) sanctioned the text, which became law on June 5.
The portal should be adorned with a bust of the writer, which was removed from a city square in 2018.
Councilman Antonio Cláudio Domingues, known as Timbé (PSD), was the author of the bill. In the justification, he writes that it is a matter of paying homage to “a personality of great prominence, the son of our São Bento”.
During a session in the Chamber, the councilor read a short sheet about Salgado, emphasizing that he was a “communist fighter, Catholic conservative, defender of family values — God, homeland and family.”
Salgado was born in São Bento do Sapucaí on January 22, 1895. After meeting the fascist leader Benito Mussolini in Italy in 1932, he created Integralism, an extreme right-wing movement characterized by authoritarian nationalism, the defense of religious values and traditions and rejection of liberal democracy.
Federal deputies Luciene Cavalcante and state deputies Carlos Giannazi, both from PSOL, presented a popular action to the Justice in which they ask for the suspension of the law, on the grounds that it contradicts the Constitution, the Statute of Racial Equality and the Inter-American Convention against Racism , Racial Discrimination and Related Forms of Intolerance, to which Brazil is a signatory.
In the play, they mention articles that state that the public power has to promote the good of all, without any forms of discrimination, and must prohibit and punish all types of prejudice.
The parliamentarians also ask for the removal of a statue in honor of the bandeirante Captain Gaspar Vaz da Cunha, known as Jaguara, from the entrance to the city.
