City Hall of SP discusses buying scrap from homeless people – 02/18/2023 – Panel

The management of Mayor Ricardo Nunes (MDB) is discussing the creation of a project to purchase scrap metal sold by homeless people in downtown São Paulo.

The material would be purchased at points far from the central region of the city, next to which there would be reception centers where they could sleep.

The idea of ​​the project is to offer a form of remuneration to these people, who usually sell materials at low prices in junkyards, and to break up crowds of homeless people in the center of the city.

The Municipality of SP is still discussing the best way to operationalize the program, possibly integrating it into the garbage collection concession contracts.

Nunes has launched programs to tackle the critical situation in the center of the capital, with cracolândia and a large growth in the number of homeless people.

In conjunction with the Government of São Paulo, it created a health, housing, assistance and security package to try to put an end to cracolândia. In addition, it intensified the removal of tents from homeless people.

The theme will be central in his attempt to seek re-election in 2024, when he will probably have as his opponent Guilherme Boulos (PSOL), who concentrates his activities in the housing area.

A lawsuit filed by the leader of the MTST led the Justice to determine, on a preliminary basis, the suspension of the removal of tents and other belongings of homeless people.
