City Hall brings forward the school year calendar for rural schools due to floods

Manaus (AM) – The opening of the 2024 academic year of teaching units located in Rio Negro, Rural Zone of the capital, was held this Thursday (11). The City of Manaus decided to bring forward the start of the calendar to January, due to the flood and ebb of the rivers, in addition to the climatic specificities of the Amazon region. With the theme “Education transforms and changes lives”, the ceremony took place at the Paulo César Nonato municipal school, which is located in the Nova Esperança community, on the Tiú branch.

Acting mayor and chief municipal secretary of the Civil House, Marcos Rotta highlighted the joy of holding the opening of the school year at the teaching unit that was completely renovated and reopened in 2023. He stressed that this type of investment is fundamental to the academic success of children and adolescents in the city of Manaus and only reinforces the commitment of Mayor David Almeida’s administration to bringing the best public services to the population.

“I am very happy to be opening the school year at this school, which had been waiting for construction for 23 years and we had the pleasure of inaugurating it in 2023. Today, we are in a more decent, honorable, beautiful, happy environment, with a better infrastructure, thanks to the vision of our highly competent mayor David Almeida and the Secretary of Education, Dulce, a woman dedicated to education, who together are advancing in the area of ​​education, with 334 schools being renovated, expanded or built”,

Anticipation

The respective academic calendar is supported by the National Education Guidelines and Bases Law (LDB), and aims to guarantee the 200 school days and 800 hours provided for by legislation, so as not to cause harm to students in the teaching and learning process.

“Manaus is an atypical city, hence the need to have a different calendar for the riverside area, due to the ebbs and flows of rivers, but there is not even any harm to students, maintaining the 200 days in which classes will be taught, always providing conditions for teachers, providing them with first-class teaching materials, so that they can perform this noble function of educating our children”, explained the acting mayor.

In the locality, Manaus City Hall serves around 2 thousand students, enrolled in one of the 29 teaching units in the riverside area. As it has a different calendar than the urban area, the school year ends in October. For Semed’s Undersecretary of Educational Management, Júnior Mar, care for riverside schools and advancement in the educational field.

“We are opening activities with schools in Rio Negro, as we have a different calendar for this region. We know that 2023 was challenging due to the biggest drought in history. Now, we return with full force to have another transformative school year. Today, we look at rural areas and notice the democratization of education”,

said Undersecretary Júnior Mar.

To welcome the guests, the unit’s students performed “Baião da Educação”, a song to start the school year and thank the school and Semed staff.

“I couldn’t wait for classes to start. I stay alone at home and here I have my friends and teachers, with whom I can talk and fill my time, especially studying, since I really like reading”, explained Carlos Emanoel Barbosa, 13 years old, who is studying 8th year of elementary school.

The teacher, Elizamar Gaspar, spoke about the return of classes and the students’ expectations for this moment.

“They always come back excited, as they spend a long period without classes and, here at our school, the students are excellent, the number of absences is as low as possible and when this happens, a team goes to their house to find out why. We all have renewed spirits and a strong desire to do our best”, highlighted the teacher.
