Cid’s lawyer causes confusion with series of advances and retreats on Bolsonaro’s jewelry

Brasilia DF) – Lieutenant Colonel Mauro Cid’s new lawyer, Cezar Roberto Bitencourt, gave confusing and divergent statements about the military’s alleged decision to confess to his actions and that of former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) in the sale of jewelry, a case investigated by the Federal Police. .

The versions of the case changed from Wednesday (16), the criminalist’s first day of work as Cid’s defender, to this Friday (18). The shuttle mitigates and aggravates Bolsonaro’s situation, depending on Bitencourt’s advance and retreat.

On Wednesday, in an interview with GloboNews, the lawyer said he did not know details of the accusations against Cid because he had just taken over the military’s defense and had not even met the client.

Even without knowing the case, Bitencourt had stated that Cid is a “military man, but he is an advisor”.

Hours after the interview, Bitencourt had a first meeting with Mauro Cid at the Army Battalion, in Brasília. The conversation lasted about three hours, and the lawyer had his first contact with the case.

On Thursday (17), the criminalist gave an interview to Folha in a milder tone. In the first question, the lawyer said that he had already given many interviews and that the attitude could “annoy the other side too”. “It is good not to poke a bee with a short stick”he stated.

Asked who the “other side” would be, he replied: “His boss, of course.”

In the 30-minute interview, Cezar Bitencourt stated that the objective of the Federal Police would be to reach Bolsonaro, not Cid, and that the chance of closing a plea bargain would be “zero” and “null”.

He also said that Cid’s job was not just about following orders.

Folha also questioned whether, in the case of the jewels taken and sold in the United States, Cid had been working under someone’s orders.

Hours after the interview, Veja magazine published a report with a new version of Bitencourt. In it, he said that Cid had decided to confess to having sold the jewels and declared that he had committed the crime on Bolsonaro’s orders.

“Cid does not deny the facts. He assumes he went to get the jewels. ‘Solve it there’. He went to settle. ‘Sell the jewel’. He sells the jewelry […] It’s actually a confession [e não colaboração].”

To GloboNews, later, he said that the case is not about jewelry, but only one: a Rolex watch. And that it would not be a confession, but “clarifications” to be made to the investigators.

Cezar Roberto Bitencourt is Mauro Cid’s third lawyer since the military was arrested on May 3. The first, Rodrigo Roca, left the defense of the lieutenant colonel seven days after the arrest.

Cid’s second defender was lawyer Bernardo Fenelon, who left the case last week citing “intimate issues”.
