The day after the match, the defender had already reassured fans with a post on social networks. The 33-year-old Spanish defender posted a smiling selfie, accompanied by a text of thanks to everyone who helped him.
“Hi everyone! Thank you all for your love and messages of support! My family and I would like to thank everyone who has looked after me since yesterday’s incident. From Chelsea’s medical team, to teammates and opponents, to St. Mary’s and to Cleveland Hospital and all the staff and doctors: a huge thank you from the bottom of my heart. Now, it’s time to recover and see you soon on the field!”, wrote Azpilicueta.
The move took place in the second half of the match. Southampton’s Mara tried to volley and hit Azpilicueta in the head, who was tended to on the pitch for almost 10 minutes, left on a stretcher and later taken consciously – but wearing an oxygen mask – to the hospital for further examinations.
Chelsea, who are in 10th place in the Premier League with 31 points – 23 less than leaders Arsenal and 11 less than Tottenham, the first club in the G4 –, return to the field next Sunday to face Spurs, at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium , at 10:30 am (from Brasilia).
