At the end of the 36th round of the Brazilian Championship, Grêmio defeated Goiás this Thursday (30) by 2-1, in Porto Alegre, and mathematically kept alive the hope, albeit remote, of winning the national title.

For Red Bull Bragantino, this possibility no longer exists. Also this Thursday, at home, the team from the interior of São Paulo ended up defeated by Fortaleza, 2-1, and has no chance of overtaking Palmeiras, the isolated leader of the competition.

This way, five teams will reach the penultimate round of the tournament fighting for the cup. In a very comfortable situation, the Alviverde team has 66 points and is the only one that has a chance of winning the trophy in advance.

To do this, in addition to beating Fluminense, they need Botafogo, Atlético-MG and Flamengo, tied with 63 points, not to win their duels against Cruzeiro, São Paulo and Cuiabá, respectively.

The most complicated math is Grêmio’s. To reach the last round while still alive, they need to beat Vasco and hope for, at most, a draw between Palmeiras and Rio de Janeiro. This way, the Gauchos would reach the final round with 65 points, and would be at most two behind Palmeiras.

The triumph over Goiás, however, was enough to guarantee the presence of the tricolor gaúcho in the 2024 Libertadores. In the last rounds, the team will still fight for a place directly in the group stage so as not to have to go through the preliminary stages as happened in the last time he competed in the competition, in 2021.

Bragantino is stuck at 59 points and, although it no longer has a chance of winning the title, it is also guaranteed in the continental competition and is fighting for a direct place.

In the fight against relegation, only one of the four unwanted vacancies remains. By losing to Grêmio, Goiás joined América Mineiro and Coritiba among those relegated. With 41, Bahia finished the 36th round in 17th place and would be the last to fall.
