Chamber may vote PDL to revoke Lula’s decrees against CACs

Members of the Commission for Public Security and Combating Organized Crime of the Chamber of Deputies are working together to try to guarantee the vote, in plenary, on the Draft Legislative Decree (PDL) that suspends the decrees of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) on weapons . The PT’s measures restricted the possibility of new registrations of restricted-use weapons and authorizations for the creation of shooting clubs.

The chairman of the committee, Deputy Ubiratan Sanderson (PL-RS), says that the idea is to approve an urgent request, so that the PDL is analyzed directly by the Plenary of the Chamber and does not need to go through the committees, such as the Constitution and Justice.

The deadline for the re-registration of weapons throughout the national territory would end in early April, but was extended until last Wednesday (03), after a request from the opposition parliamentarians to the Minister of Justice, Flávio Dino. Even so, the deadline was considered too short for those with registration as collectors, sport shooters and hunters (CAC) to regularize the registration of weapons.

The possibility of asking for more time to re-register weapons in the country is also not ruled out, according to Deputy Marcos Pollon (PL-MS), one of the PDL defenders in the commission. According to him, in addition to the short time for regularization, many people were not even aware of the need to update the gun register. The deputy pointed out that “there was no campaign on the part of the government, many people ended up being harmed by this”.

The issue of the deadline for re-registering weapons returned to the political scene after the Federal Police carried out, this week, Operation Day After, in search of people who did not meet the legal requirements of suitability for the possession of firearms. The PF announced the arrest of 50 people in several states, and the seizure of weapons and ammunition, but these people already had open arrest warrants for other crimes. In a press conference, Dino said that 6,178 CACs who did not re-register are now “potential targets” of the PF.

In an interview with People’s Gazette, Pollon said that a lot of misinformation was created about the PF operation, mainly due to the fact of trying to link the arrest of people who committed other crimes with those who carry weapons, but did not re-register. “No sane person would advocate that an individual with an arrest warrant be released,” he said. The parliamentarian also demanded that the police comply with thousands of other open warrants.
