The Chamber of Deputies approved this Friday (7) the bill by Guilherme Boulos (PSOL) that transforms the so-called “solidarity kitchens” into public policy, a program based on an experience started in 2021 by the MTST (Movimento dos Trabalhadores Sem- Ceiling), of which the parliamentarian is a leader.

The goal of public policy is to provide free lunch to people who are starving. It foresees that the Ministry of Development and Social Assistance, Family and Fight against Hunger register the solidarity kitchens across the country from a public notice.

With that, they will start to receive public resources for the purchase of food and the payment of personnel. The purchase will be made by the entity, following the parameters of the Federal Government’s Food Acquisition Program.

In February, the Minister of Development and Social Assistance, Wellington Dias (PT), told the Sheet that Cozinha Solidária would be part of the plan to remove Brazil from the Hunger Map, in addition to the Bolsa Família and the full-time school program, “which, in addition to the education part, has lunch and within the School Meals program”.

The project was approved by symbolic vote and will now be forwarded to a vote in the Senate. It was the first proposal of the psolista approved in the Chamber.

The MTST solidarity kitchens total 45 units spread throughout Brazil. Created at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, they have already served more than 1.8 million free meals, according to the movement’s estimate.
