Centrist wing of Lula government does not support change in BC – 02/06/2023 – Panel

The attacks by Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) against the Central Bank should not be supported by the centrist wing of his government coalition.
PSD president Gilberto Kassab says the president’s criticisms are expected, but defends maintaining the institution’s independence, as required by law approved in 2021.
In the MDB, this point was included in the government program of Simone Tebet, current Minister of Planning. “Combating inflation permanently, with responsible fiscal policy, contributing positively to the effectiveness of the monetary policy under the command of the independent Central Bank”, says her plan for last year’s presidential election.
União Brasil does not support the change in format advocated by leftist parties either.
For weeks, Lula has been criticizing the BC’s performance in defining interest rates. This Monday (6), he said that the current level of the rate “is a shame”.
“There is no justification for the interest rate to be at 13.50% [ela está na verdade em 13,75%]. Just look at the letter from the Copom for us to know that this interest rate increase is shameful,” said Lula.
