CBV says that punishment harms preparation for the Olympics

The Brazilian Volleyball Confederation (CBV) criticized the punishments announced by the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB), in the wallace case, and stated that the sanctions could directly affect the preparation of the modality for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. In addition, according to the entity, they will prevent the participation of the Brazilian teams in the Pan American Games this year, in Santiago, Chile.

“CECOB’s decision seriously jeopardizes the preparation of Brazilian volleyball for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, and prevents teams from participating in the Pan American Games, in the youth World Cups and in the stages of the Beach Volleyball World Tour,” he said. the CBV, in a note.

The entity, however, ensures that it will strive to keep the teams in the pre-Olympic tournaments. At least in theory, the CBV, being suspended, could not register players in the competitions that define the classifieds for next year’s Olympics. These tournaments will be played between September and October this year.

“The CBV guarantees that it will dedicate all its efforts and resources to maintain the preparation of the athletes, on court and on the beach, for these important competitions. that CBV has a broad and unrestricted right to defense.”

The punishments were announced by the Ethics Committee of the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB) on Tuesday. And they refer to the lineup and use of the opposite Wallace de Souza on the court by Cruzeiro in the final of the men’s volleyball Superliga, on Sunday (30). The player had been suspended since April and could only play again this Wednesday (3).

The board then suspended the CBV for six months; the president of CBV, Radamés Lattari Filho, for one year of all sports activities linked to COB. And he also recommended that Banco do Brasil and the Ministry of Sport cut all financial transfers to the CBV for six months.

Radamés is CBV’s vice-president, but has been in charge of the entity on an interim basis since president Walter Pitombo Laranjeiras, known as Toroca, stepped down in January of this year due to health problems. Now, who takes over is Igor Ribeiro Dantas, president of the Federation of Rio Grande do Norte.

The COB Ethics Council also decided to considerably increase Wallace’s sentence, which was previously punished with 90 days for clubs and one year for the Brazilian national team. Now, the opposite, if the punishment is maintained, he could end his career at the age of 35, since he is suspended for five years in both scenarios. Another CECOB suggestion is for the Federal Court of Accounts (TCU) to make a special accounting on the federal public values ​​invested in the CBV.

“DISPROPORTIONATE”

In a note, the CBV said that the COB’s punishment is “absurd” and “disproportionate” and promised “legal measures”. “The CBV received with perplexity the decision of the Council of Ethics of the Brazilian Olympic Committee (CECOB)”, stated the entity. “The decision goes so far as to determine the suspension of the transfer of COB resources to the CBV and recommend that public or private entities withdraw their sponsorship and support.”

The CBV refuted the arguments pointed out by CECOB to apply the punishments. One of them was that the Brazilian Center for Mediation and Arbitration (CBMA) would not have legitimacy to mediate between the parties.

In the same note, the CBV said it was “sure” of its decisions on the Wallace case and promised “legal measures”. “The CBV is obliged to take all the legal measures necessary to guarantee its rights, given the threat to the participation of court and beach teams in important international competitions, and the risk to sponsorships and partnerships that give tranquility to the professional growth of players, for holding court and beach events, and for the development of volleyball as a sport and as a social instrument.”

SHOT IN LULA

The Olympic medalist’s punishment with the Brazilian volleyball team happened after Wallace suggested a “shot in the face” of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) in a publication on social networks in January of this year.

Wallace only entered the court on Sunday and was Superliga champion for Cruzeiro, thanks to an injunction granted by the Superior Court of Sports Justice (STJD). After the game, he said he was wrong to ask his followers who would shoot Lula and thanked the people who supported him. “I made a mistake off the court, which I apologized for, I regretted it. I don’t want any athlete to go through that”, he said.

In January, Sada Cruzeiro regretted Wallace’s attitude and announced his removal from the team for an indefinite period, highlighting the need for caution in demonstrations on social networks because of the “delicate” moment in the country. The athlete is a declared supporter of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL).
