FarmaUSA Life Science will be the first company to produce, in Brazil, the API (Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient) of CBD (Cannabidiol, a substance derived from cannabis). Currently, the sector needs to import the ingredient to manufacture the final product. This change is very positive, as it can reduce prices for the patient by at least 30%, according to the producer. If in fact the company’s plans are consolidated in the second half, the implementation of the distribution of Cannabidiol by the SUS (Unified Health System) will be more sustainable.

Until the Covid pandemic, most Brazilians had never heard of IFA. The term is technical, used by the pharmaceutical industry to designate the “soul” of the medicine. It is worth remembering that in order to be able to produce the coronavirus vaccine here, there was a need to import the API of the product. The same has been happening with CBD. Very different from the final product – in the case of oil, a liquid -, the API from cannabis it is a white and granular material, similar to rock salt. In Brazil, the importation of flowers, which give rise to the extract, is prohibited.

FarmaUSA already has a laboratory ready in São Paulo. It was audited by Anvisa (Health Surveillance Agency) and approved. Subsequently, the decision was published in the Official Diary of the Union in December. This measure releases the manufacture of API throughout the national territory. According to FarmaUSA, the project has so far cost BRL 30 million, but investments could reach BRL 50 million.

“We have the capacity to serve the domestic market and even export to Latin America”, says Helder Dario, pharmaceutical director of FarmaUSA. “The production capacity will be 10 tons per year.” The company’s forecast is to have 20% of the factory’s capacity in operation in the second half. Next year, it has plans to increase to 35%.
