Cássio takes two penalties and puts Corinthians in the semifinal of the Copa do Brasil – 07/15/2023 – Sport

Once again, Corinthians relied on the great reach of goalkeeper Cássio to advance in the Copa do Brasil. This Saturday (15), the alvinegro idol saved two penalties and was decisive for the formation of Parque São Jorge to qualify for the semifinal.

At Neo Química Arena, in Itaquera, the alvinegra team won 3-2 in regular time, with goals from Renato Augusto, Yuri Alberto and Róger Guedes. As he had lost the first leg by 1-0, away from home, the result in the capital of São Paulo forced the decision by penalties, when Cássio shone.

Fábio Santos, Giuliano and Yuri Alberto scored, while the goalkeeper saved shots from Paulinho Boia and Benítez to set up the 3-1 victory.

In the semifinal, the Corinthians opponent will be São Paulo. Morumbi’s team advanced in the knockout stage after eliminating Palmeiras in the quarterfinals, with two wins: 1-0 at Murumbi and 2-1 at Allianz Parque, on the comeback.

The order of the field commands for the next phase will still be defined by the CBF (Brazilian Football Confederation) in a draw.

In the other bracket, Grêmio and Flamengo will face each other after eliminating, respectively, Bahia and Athletico Paranaense.

Of the four, only São Paulo has yet to win the tournament. Corinthians has three trophies, while Flamengo has four and Grêmio is the second biggest winner, with five – Cruzeiro has six.

As in the last two phases, when they needed to turn around Remo and Atlético Mineiro, the Parque São Jorge team again had to look for the score playing at home.

In the first 45 minutes, even though they created the main goalscoring chances, Corinthians did not have a good collective performance, but endangered América’s goal in individual plays, especially with Matías Rojas and Róger Guedes.

Rookie of the day for the alvinegra team, the Paraguayan midfielder showed an offensive repertoire, with good passes, long-distance finishes and vision to break through the defense. In his best move, he served Róger Guedes with a cross from the trivela and the attacker headed the ball into the crossbar.

Even with the advantage of the first leg, the Minas Gerais team was not limited to just defending. In addition to scoring the Corinthian ball, he had two good finishes.

On the way back from the break, however, Corinthians began to show more organization. At the turn from the first to the second minute, he soon opened the scoring, when Fagner crossed Renato Augusto’s head and the midfielder scored with a header.

With the minimum partial advantage, the home team returned the score of the first leg and took the decision to penalties. At 19 minutes, however, Yuri Alberto disenchanted. After wasting some good chances in the match, he threw himself on the ball to deflect a Ruan Oliveira cross into the net.

When it looked like the hosts could kill the match, however, America managed to react. In the 23rd minute, Benítez received the ball in the penalty area, turned and finished to score.

The scare didn’t last long. Three minutes later, Róger Guedes scored with a header and scored for Corinthians again, after defender Gil cornered a cross and the ball appeared clean for the striker to score the third for the hosts.

Once again, however, the visitors went looking for the score that forced the decision by penalties. At 37 minutes, Mastriani scored the second for América and made it 3-3 on aggregate.
